Description
The largest of Vienna's 50 cemeteries
Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) is located in the outer city district of Simmering, it is actually on the fringe of Vienna. In 1863 as the population and industrialization of Vienna exploded it was decided that a much larger cemetery would be necessary - outside the city.
The name Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) refers to the significance, not the location of the burial grounds. Lovers of classical music find this a worthwhile sightseeing stop. The musicians’ corner of the cemetery is graced with beautiful fresh and artificial flowers, gifts from strangers to Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, Schubert and others.
