Description

A city once surrounded by walls

The Historic Centre of Vienna is rich with sites to visit. The 19th century Ringstrasse is filled with grand buildings, architectural wonders including Baroque castles and beautiful gardens. There are monuments and parks. The Michaelerplatz is where the remains of a Roman settlement were unearthed.

Layers of history lie beneath the Historic Centre of Vienna. Once surrounded by walls in order to defend itself from attackers, those walls were razed after 1857, making it possible for the city centre to expand as it has. There are many sights to see today which speak of the great age of Viennese Classical music. There are findings of churches like the Ruprechtskirche which was built as a Romanesque church in the 11th century.
